Q.
Have you made such reports?
A
I have.
2.
A.
..
I particularly wish to keep a name out of the hearing of the public
here.
Do you remember sometime about the end of January you made a
report verbally - between the 22nd and 27th January?
I made quite a number of reports to you but there is one particular
instance, one glaring instance which I did report to you.
Would you please write down the name of the person regarding whom you
made this report?
í
A.
Certainly. (Does).
A.
Q.
A.
If that name is a fairly common one will you please add to it any
detail about his person, or past occupation which would enable him to
be identified?
The gentleman in question
Put it in writing if you don't mind. (Does so).
What is the nature of the report against the person which you made to
me?
The person in question came to me and attempted to bribe me.
Q.
Do you remember the exact words constituting the bribe?
A.
Q.
He asked me whether I could secure an agency for him and said that if
ti I was successful to give his actual words "taaf ka touyau hou ch'u"
有啲好處】
which means "it will be beneficial to all parties" (93) Another expression which he used was "yan ch'a" (
) that is,
literally, "drink tea", and as a matter of fact he repeatedly invited
me to go out and have lunch with him, which I refused.
From knowledge of Chinese and from your own knowledge of the Chinese
way of putting things you put a certain interpretation on these
apparently innocent remarks?
I interpreted the remarks as being an offer of a bribe.
A.
Q.
And you came to me in what state were you when you came to me?
A.
I was very indignant and angry that anyone should have offered me a
bribe.
Q.
Was any other person present at my desk when you made that report?
A.
Yes, another A.1.0. He is no longer in the Service. A Mr. K.L. Dun.
Q.
Did he make any remarks when he heard your report?
A. He said a similar request had been made to him.
